Paediatric Neurology

Contact: (0191) 282 3820 - Dr R Forsyth, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist (Clinical Lead)

Our Paediatric Neurology department is the only specialist service in the North of England for the treatment of children with neurological disorders. We deliver highly advanced treatments for acute disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. This includes malformations, neurodegenerative and neurometabolic disorders, spasticity, strokes and movement disorders.

One of only two WHO designated UK centres for children's muscle disease

We have a number of areas of particular expertise, including epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, neonatal neurology and developmental disorders, and we are one of only two World Health Organisation designated centres for muscle disease in the UK.

We place great emphasis on helping children to resume their normal lives as quickly and smoothly as possible after treatment. For example, we have a specialist rehabilitation service for children recovering from severe head injuries, such as those caused by road traffic accidents and falls.

Clinical expertise when and where you need it

We deliver most of our services on the dedicated children's wards at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, but we also provide expert advice to our colleagues treating young patients in intensive care units, not only in Newcastle, but in the wider region, and we work in close partnership with colleagues in the Child Development Centre to evaluate and treat complex neurodevelopmental disorders.

If you don’t live in Newcastle, you can still benefit from our services as we operate a full programme of outreach clinics in local towns, so you shouldn’t have to travel too far for your child to be seen by one of our specialists.
