Childrens Services

Paediatric Respiratory Unit

Contact: (0191) 282 5089 - Dr C O'Brien, Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician

Our paediatric respiratory unit provides specialist respiratory care for children throughout the North East who are referred to us from both local paediatricians and GPs. We’re based at the Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary, where we care for our young patients on dedicated wards and in outpatient departments that are familiar with the specific needs of children.

We provide a comprehensive service, ranging from simple treatment for straight forward respiratory disorders, to leading edge care for more complex respiratory problems and we provide the regional service for patients diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.

We can provide the very latest drug therapies, dedicated paediatric surgery and technological support if required, and we have access to highly specialised lung function, radiology, bronchoscopy and laboratory services.

Access to latest technology and facilities

Respiratory problems can be highly complex and we’ve invested in the very latest technology and diagnostic facilities to help us get as accurate an initial diagnosis as possible. We have a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team specialised in children’s respiratory medicine. It includes consultants, physiotherapists, nurses, dieticians and social workers, each with a specific area of expertise and each dedicated to providing your child with the best treatment available.

We appreciate how distressing it is when your child is sick and operate an on-call system for out-of-hours emergencies. Similarly, for more complex problems, you will usually have open access to our specialist facilities and staff, ensuring your child is assessed and treated as quickly as possible.
