Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

This is a busy Paediatric Intensive Care Unit consisting of 10 beds for children aged between newborn up to 16 years.

Our staff here provide specialist care for children with overwhelming sepsis, severe trauma or who have undergone neurosurgery and work closely in partnership with colleagues on Ward 3 at the RVI, also a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The PICU is based at the Newcastle General Hospital. To find us: 

  • Come through the hospital's main entrance and walk straight down the main corridor.
  • You will find PICU situated off the main corridor on your left hand side, opposite Ward 23.

How to get to the hospital

Staff you are likely to meet

The clinical team on PICU includes: Doctors, Nurses, Hospital Play Specialists/Nursery Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Critical Care Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Dieticians.

Things you need to know

  • Open visiting for parents, only 2 visitors at the bedside at any one time
  • Please do not bring fresh flowers onto the ward. This is to help with infection control.
