Childrens Services

Ward 11 New Victoria Wing (GNCH)

Ward 11 is the North East's Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit, and the Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service.

We aim to provide the highest standards of care to our patients and their families, taking into consideration the emotional, social, psychological and physical needs of the child/young person and their carers. We do this by involving them in every stage of the decision-making process. 

Our Dressings Treatment Room has the world’s first 3D interactive system, to help put children at ease when receiving treatment.

The clinical team on Ward 11 includes:

Play facilities

During your stay on ward 11 you will meet our nursery nurses Claire (Monday & Tuesday) and Ann-Marie (Wednesday, Thursdays & Friday), who love to play and provide you with activities and distraction to make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable.

We have a play room with a range of toys, activities and jigsaws where you can meet and socialise with other children but toys can also be taken to your bed or cubicle. We have a wide range of creative resources, games, books, computer consoles such Xbox, Wii, Game Boys, PSPs and even tablets to explore the free Wi-Fi, to do work for school or play games.

During your stay on the ward if you need any dressing or treatment our dressing room has a very exciting interactive 3D television where you can sail away with captain jack or play a range of games.

In the four bedded bay we have giant connect four, football table and a mini pool table where you can challenge each other, relatives to games. We also have a large range of arts & crafts that are available. At each individual bed space there are televisions which have basic Freeview channels and are free from 7am-7pm but we also have a wide range of DVDs for you to browse at your own leisure.

If you are booked in for a planned operation on the ward feel free to give us a call and we would be happy to arrange a time for you to come look around prior to your surgery.

Things you need to know

  • There is an open visiting policy on the ward in agreement with the nurse-in-charge.
  • Overnight facilities are available.
  • Please note that only one parent or relative can stay overnight because of lack of space and safety reasons. However, the ward sister will always discuss any special circumstances with you.
  • Hot drinks are only allowed in the parents' room and not in patient cubicles or patient areas
  • We have a large play area and each patient cubicle has its own built-in TV with DVD player.

How to find us

We are based on level four of the Great North Children's Hospital, New Victoria Wing, RVI.

  • Enter the main entrance and keep to the left hand side there you will see the lift opposite main reception desk.
  • Enter the lift and select level four. On leaving the lift please follow the signpost for Ward 11 to your left-hand side corridor, and follow the corridor until you arrive at your destination.

  • Enter the hospital from the multi-storey car park and take your immediate left. Keep going along the corridor past the escalators and take the next left, carry on straight ahead until you see the lifts.
  • Enter the lift and select level four. On leaving the lift please follow the sign post for Ward 11 to your left hand side. Follow the corridor until arriving at your destination.

  • Enter Leazes Wing main entrance, walk past the reception desk and turn right when you reach the café.
  • Walk down this corridor until you reach a junction, there you will find the stairs and lifts - take either of these to level four.
  • Exit the lift and take a left along the corridor. Follow the corridor until you arrive at your destination.
