Ward 14 Paediatric Oncology Day Unit - Outpatients (GNCH)

The unit includes outpatient and day care facilities for children and young people up to their 19th birthday, who have been diagnosed with cancer. 

The Outpatient Unit has five consultation rooms, with separate children and young people's waiting areas. 

The Day Care Unit has 12 beds and provides chemotherapy and associated supportive treatments for patients with a range of cancer conditions.


How to find us

The unit is based on Level 4 of the Great North Children's Hospital, New Victoria Wing, RVI.

  • Enter the main entrance and keep to the immediate right hand side there you will see the lift and stairs.
  • Enter the lift and select level 04 upon exiting turn left and follow the corridor until arriving at your destination on your left hand side.

  • Enter Leazes Wing main entrance, walk past the reception desk and turn right when you reach the café.
  • Walk down this corridor past a large glazed atrium. Continue along the corridor till the very end until you find the lifts and stairs on your left hand side.
  • Enter the lift and select level 04 upon exiting turn left and follow the corridor until arriving at your destination on your left hand side.

  • Enter the hospital from the multi-storey car park and take your immediate left. Then left again past the food court on your left hand side you will find the lift and stairs.
  • Enter the lift and select level 04 upon exiting turn left and follow the corridor until arriving at your destination on your left hand side.

  • The service operates 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Staff you are likely to meet

The service is supported by Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Staff, including Psychologist, Dietician, Physiotherapist, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapist and Hospital Play Specialist.

Play facilities

The Play Specialists are Lesley Hall and Bonnie McKenzie who are on duty Monday to Friday. They provide specialised play for children and teenagers. This includes normalised play and preparation for central lines, portacath, cannulas and nasal gastric tubes. Using Chemo Ducks and specially adapted dolls, the play specialist aims to reduce anxiety for theatre, MRI, CT, bone scans and radiotherapy. Distraction is available for those patients having procedures in treatment areas.

Their main focus is to provide a child friendly environment and facilitate family centred care.
