Childrens Services

Ward 8 New Victoria Wing (GNCH)

Ward 8B is a nurse-led Day Unit for children and young people (aged 0 to 18 years), undergoing a general anaesthetic for a wide range of treatments.

Children who attend the ward for the day usually require surgery in either ophthalmology, general surgery, urology or dental services. Most patients are discharged within a few hours of their procedure.

The ward works closely with other departments such as Neonatology, Paediatric Intensive Care, Oncology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology and General Paediatrics.

We work with other specialities who treat children, including Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedics. We also care for children requiring routine outpatient investigations.

Highest standards of care

We aim to provide the highest standard of care taking into consideration the emotional, social, psychological and physical needs of the child/young person and their carers. We do this by involving them in every stage of the decision-making process.

We aim to minimise the effects of hospitalisation by nursing the child/young person in the most appropriate environment and promoting its therapeutic effects. We provide written information and contact numbers and names for use after discharge. You can also get more information about dealing with any pain after surgery at www.mychildisinpain.org.uk.

We have surgeons from numerous specialities, operating on the same day in various operating theatres. Patients come to the unit for a variety of procedures, so please do not worry if you see other patients going to theatre or going home before your child. This is quite normal.

Things you need to know

  • We can treat up to 20 patients every day. We are open Monday to Friday from 07.30am - 20.00pm.
  • Morning admissions are asked to attend the ward at 07.45am and afternoon admissions are asked to attend at 12.00noon.
  • We do not serve hot food on the Day Unit. Your child will be offered a pack lunch when they return from theatre. We do have a limited supply of baby milk and food. Please be aware that we cannot offer parents/visitors drinks. There are catering facilities in the hospital which provide hot meals and drinks.
