    I am currently the Clinical Director of the Dental & Maxillofacial Directorate.

    I am a Board member of the Tri-Collegiate membership examinations in paediatric dentistry.  I was Chair of the UK Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Paediatric Dentistry until April 2015, President of the UK British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) for 2012 – 2013. I have been an Examiner of the Royal Colleges for all levels (foundation, specialist and consultant training).

    Locally, I am the Health Education North East (HENE) & Trust Tutor for the Hospital’s Dental Foundation Trainees within the Trust.

My original professional background was in oral pathology and I trained in Radiology in Newcastle and Glasgow before my appointment in Edinburgh. My current interests are in ultrasound imaging of salivary glands, teaching and forensic odontology.

    As a product of the North East training in dentistry and orthodontics, I am very passionate about what the North East has to offer, and I am involved in the training of our dental undergraduates and orthodontic postgraduates in our region.

    I qualified from Leeds in 1988 and then worked in Maxillofacial units and General Dental Practise gaining my Dental Fellowship in 1991. My Masters degree was gained in 1997 at Newcastle University along with my specialist training. My higher training was at Manchester Dental Hospital. I became an RVI Consultant in 2001 and Lead for CLP (Cleft Lip and Palate) for the Northern and Yorkshire region in 2002.

    My clinical work is in the field of CLP as well as complex orthodontic conditions in children and adults, especially those that require additional input from other medical or dental specialities. Active treatment is carried out within Newcastle Dental Hospital, but I have clinics across the whole of the Northern region.

    I am active in clinical and didactic teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and have been responsible for running the MSc programme and supervising PhDs, particularly in the area of CLP. I am currently Training Programme Director for Orthodontics across the North of England. I lecture nationally on a range of subjects including CLP, communication skills and ethics.

    I am actively involved in a number of multi-centre research trials, gaining international awards, in the field of growth and development of the jaws as well as CLP.

    Nationally, I am active in the British Orthodontic Society and am currently Director of the British Orthodontic Research Foundation and Chair of the Scholarships and Grants Committee.

    Following graduation from University of Glasgow 1998, entered into two year general professional training post. First year as Vocational Trainee in General Dental Practice, and the second as a Community Dental Officer in the Salaried Dental Service.

    In 2000 returned to Glasgow Dental Hospital as a Senior House Officer before taking up a Specialist Registrar post in Birmingham Dental Hospital and School and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.   • Biography

    I am a clinical academic with key roles in delivering dental undergraduate training within Newcastle university. I am Director of Studies and degree programme director for Oral and Dental Health Sciences.

    My clinical research interests focus on the rehabilitation of the edentulous (partial or complete tooth loss) patient, and my clinical practice reflects this area of interest.

    As a past President of the British Prosthodontic Society, I am an advocate for this group of patients who often experience profound negative effects on their quality of life as a result of their tooth loss.

    I also act as an external examiner for a number of other universities, currently including Glasgow and Manchester.

  • Biography

    I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1997 and went on to complete my post-graduate Masters in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle University in 2003. Following this I completed my Specialist Training at Newcastle Dental Hospital in 2009. I have been a full-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental Hospital since 2009.

    My current duties include General Restorative opinion and treatment clinics, non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment, dental implant treatment, and the provision of dental services for the Trust's Head and Neck MD Oncology service. I am involved in the training and education of Post-Graduate M.Clin.Dent students at Newcastle University.

    My research interests are: the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases; risk factors for periodontal diseases; clinical trial design; research ethics of pharmacological treatments for periodontal diseases, and the benefits of smoking cessation.

    I have published widely in the field of periodontology having over 100 research articles in refereed journals and five textbooks. 

    I have a wide-ranging teaching and clinical input into the education of undergraduates and postgraduates in Newcastle. I am a national research ethics advisor and currently chair the Northern and Yorkshire REC. I act regularly as an expert witness regarding medico-legal aspects of periodontology for defence societies.

    Qualified from Manchester in 1995 with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Research and in 1998 with a BDS.

    Spent 6 years in the Army providing dental care to troops and allied civilians in the UK and on operations in Bosnia and Iraq.

    Has worked for the Community Dental Services providing treatment on referral for special needs patients, children and the phobic including treatment under sedation.

    Worked for many years in private practice and provides a restorative referral service for a small corporate body. Completed a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry and gained a Distinction in an MSc in Restorative Dentistry.

    I have been a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry since 2009. However, I began my role here at Newcastle Dental Hospital in 2012. I completed my Specialist Training in Restorative Dentistry at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School 2004-2009. During this time, I was awarded an ITI Clinical Scholarship in Implant Dentistry and spent a year at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA.

     

    I enjoy teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly those in specialty training. I am an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I have also had a number of committee roles for the European Association for Osseointegration.

    I have been a consultant with particular expertise in all aspects of implant dentistry since 2000. The focus of our work is to improve the wellbeing of people who are significantly compromised by having missing teeth, often as a result of cancer, trauma or birth defects. 

    I am examiner for one of the Surgical Royal Colleges and am heavily involved with specialist training, which has involved undertaking a number of roles for the Northern Deanery who oversee specialist training. I am also Degree Programme Director for a University of Newcastle dental implant training course.

    I have been a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry since 2005 and a Professor of Periodontology since 2009.

    My main research interests are in clinical trials in periodontology, the use of biomarkers in saliva for earlier diagnosis of oral diseases, and management of risk factors for periodontitis, particularly diabetes and smoking.

    I am the Director of the Dental Clinical Research Facility, a dedicated research clinic for oral and dental research in Newcastle Dental Hospital. Ongoing trials focus on diabetes and periodontal disease and pathogenic mechanisms in periodontal inflammation.

    I am Chair of the Newcastle and North Tyneside NHS Research Ethics Committee.

    John Whitworth is a Restorative Senior Lecturer/hon Consultant in Newcastle with a special interest in Endodontics. He is past-President of the British Endodontic Society and currently serves on the Executive Board and Chairs the Education and Scholarship Committee of the of the European Society of Endodontology.

    For 10 years he served the International Endodontic Journal as Assistant Editor/Deputy Editor in Chief. He is an active teacher, clinician and researcher and has contributed to a number of textbooks including Bergenholtz Textbook of Endodontology and the 10th and 11th Editions of Pathways of the Pulp.

  • Biography

    I lead the Sedation Department in the Dental Hospital, providing a dedicated service for anxious patients who need pharmacological sedation to undergo dental care. The department treats both adults and children, using intravenous and inhalational methods of sedation.

    I have been a consultant with the Trust for 17 years, with particular clinical and research expertise in benzodiazepine sedation. I am Chairman of the Trust Sedation Advisory Group and Degree Programme Director for the University Diploma in Sedation for Dentistry.

    I deliver a sedation teaching programme for dental students and I am responsible for supporting hospital dentists in training, as Dental Clinical Tutor. I hold roles as Assessor, Examiner and Faculty Tutor for the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons. I have recently been a subject expert for NICE, helping to develop national guidelines for paediatric sedation.
