Specialist care and treatment

The Dermatology and Plastic Surgery services run a joint laser clinic for children to treat facial vascular conditions such as “port wine” stains and facial telangiectasia (burst facial veins). Adults can access these services but funding must be confirmed by a GP at the time of referral.

The treatment is only mildly uncomfortable and is carried out in the outpatient department, usually without the need for an anaesthetic as the vascular laser has a special cooling component.

In addition, we have a carbon dioxide laser for treating skin surface defects and lesions. A local anaesthetic is given for treatment with the carbon dioxide laser as it is a little more uncomfortable.
