House Dust Mites

House dust mites are found in all homes. They are found in the dust inside mattresses, pillows, duvets, upholstered furniture and carpets. They feed on dead skin, which we shed, and which is found in domestic dust. House dust mites can cause an allergic reaction in people with eczema. It is not possible to remove all the mites but dust control can reduce them.

House Dust Mite Control Measures
1. Bedding (pillows, mattresses and covers) should be vacuumed at least twice a week. Special covers can be bought, made of Gortex.
2. Carpets should be vacuumed each day especially the bedroom carpets.
3. Damp dust surfaces.
4. Bed linen should be washed weekly at a high temperature. Gortex covers should be wiped down each week.
5. Wash curtains monthly.
6. Replace bedroom carpets with sealed wood or cork flooring if possible.

Gortex covers can be bought from high street stores and catalogues. Prices vary.
