Shave Excision

Patient Information For Shave Excision

Your mole has been shaved off. A small wound will remain which will take 1-2 weeks to heal over. The wound should be cleaned daily with cooled, boiled water. Apply a thin smear of antiseptic ointment and a small dry dressing.

It does not matter if the wound gets wet in the bath or shower, just clean the wound as before and apply a fresh dressing.

If bleeding occurs, apply firm direct pressure for at least 20 minutes. Once healed, the scar may be slightly raised and red. After several months it will settle to a more flesh coloured, flat scar.

Because the technique only removes the part of the mole which protrudes above the skin, brown pigment and hairs (if present originally) may persist in approximately 25% of cases.
