Ear Nose & Throat Service (ENT)

Ear Nose & Throat Service (ENT)

We are the largest and most advanced centre for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) problems in the North of England, providing a comprehensive range of emergency and non-emergency services for both children and adults. Our teams of experienced clinicians are at the leading edge of ENT healthcare and are committed to ensuring that you receive the best care possible, in a clean and friendly environment.

The ENT casualty clinic at Freeman Hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for emergency GP referrals. For less severe cases, our specialist nurses can provide you with expert help on allergies, ear care and assessing the need for and arranging tonsils surgery. We even have a dedicated paediatric ENT nurse who is specially trained to carry out ENT examinations on children, with the minimum of fuss and anxiety.

Specialist services with a personal touch

Our expertise is recognised by hospitals from across the region who refer their more complex cases to us due to the skills, facilities and specialist services we provide.  We can also call on additional expertise from colleagues in other specialisms, such as neurosurgery.

Our ENT department includes the Northern Head and Neck Cancer Unit, where our surgeons perform complex head and neck tumour surgery, with a fast-track system that guarantees you’ll be seen within two weeks. We also have a specialist Macmillan head and neck cancer nurse to make sure you can benefit from first rate care and support throughout your treatment pathway.

We are home to the Northern Ear Implant Centre, dedicated to hearing restoration and the sole providers in the North East for state-of-the-art Bone Anchored Hearing Aids and RetroX implants.

If you need an operation, we try and avoid open surgery through techniques such as endoscopic sinus surgery. This is a ground-breaking procedure for treating pituitary tumours in the brain using remotely-controlled probes. Because it avoids the need for open surgery, you have a more rapid and less stressful recovery, with no scarring.

We also provide a regional Speech and Language Therapy Service for patients with voice, speech and swallowing problems - this is the only service led by a professor of speech therapy in the UK.
