Benign and malignant diseases of the head and neck (thyroid gland, salivary gland , mouth, throat and voice box, voice and swallowing problems)
I was appointed to this post in 2005. Having trained in all aspects of head and neck surgery, a large proportion of my clinical work involves managing diseases of the head and neck. My research interests are primarily on the processes of care, decision making and functional outcomes in head and neck oncology.
I have published over 45 papers, reviews and book chapters on head and neck oncology. I have co-edited the book, “ENT infections: An atlas of Assessment, Diagnosis and Management” and also co-edit the section on head and neck cancers for the e-learning for ENT programme. Currently, I serve as Secretary for ENT.Head & Neck.UK and Treasurer for the Otorhinolaryngologic Research Society.
I undertake clinics at the Freeman Hospital and at Palmer Hospital in Jarrow.
I am a consultant of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne since 2003. I have a super-speciality interest in Rhinology and Facial Plastics surgery in addition to the snoring surgery. I am the member of the SAC, the Early years representative on the SAC committee, and an educational supervisor for junior doctors. I am an examiner for the MRCS exam for the RCS of Edinburgh.
I perform 60 Rhinoplasty procedures a year including extracorporeal Septorhinoplasties for tertiary secondary cases in addition to pinnaplasty procedures. I perform nasal valve surgery and snoring surgery.
My current rhinology practice also involves the management of patients with advanced sinus disease including frontal sinus pathology, benign tumours of the nasal cavities, fungal Rhinosinusitis and Endoscopic repair of CSF leaks.
My research interests involve the quality of life assessment of patients after septorhinoplasty, nasal valve surgery, and extracorporeal septorhinoplasty. I lead a research project on the study of biofilms in chronic Rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyposis.
Mr. Siou is originally from the North East and was appointed Consultant within the department in 2008. Prior to this he completed his specialist training within the Tyne and Wear area. He sees and treats children and adults for all general ear, nose and throat conditions at the Freeman Hospital, but also jointly provides a specialist paediatric airway service with other Consultant colleagues based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Mr. Siou also provides a weekly ENT service within the Gateshead community of Whickham, based at Whickham Cottage Medical Centre.

I am Lead Clinician of the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Unit which is one of the largest such units in the country. My clinical interests include benign and malignant head and neck surgery and thyroid surgery. I am one of 2 consultant surgeons involved in treatment of paediatric airway problems and work closely clinically with the respiratory paediatricians.
Amongst my other interests I am an examiner and supervising examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and am a National Cancer Peer Reviewer. I continue to be active in collaborative research relating to Head & Neck Oncology.
I relax easily in conventional regional fashion and spend as much time as possible on the water or rugby touchlines.

I moved to the Freeman Hospital in 1995, after working for 3 years as a consultant otolaryngologist (ENT surgeon) in Glasgow Royal infirmary. I am currently the Hon Sec of ENTUK, the national specialty association for ENT specialists. I have a particular interest in developing reliable measures of clinical outcomes.
Research:
My Health Services Research projects include being lead clinician in a multicentre RCT on tonsillectomy, and the generation of a Voice Outcomes package (Wellcome). My current work centres on the extra-oesophageal manifestations of gastro-oesophageal reflux, the mechamisms underlying recurrent acute tonsillitis and the role of cognitive behaviour therapy in medically unexplained symptoms such as globus, dysphonia and catarrh.
My basic science collaborations have studied tumour suppressor genes in head and neck cancer, fibroblast growth factors in acoustic neuromas, mucin gene expression in chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis, methods of bacterial / tonsil interaction and markers for the early diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Work is currently underway on aspects of innate immunity in chronic rhinosinusitis

Mr Tsikoudas completed his undergraduate training at the Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki, Greece.
He completed his basic surgical training in the Yorkshire region.
Later moved to Scotland to undertake his specialist registrar training in ENT surgery at the east of Scotland rotation where he worked at the Edinburgh University Hospitals and at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. During the end of this period he completed a fellowship in endoscopic sinus surgery at the AMC Institute in Amsterdam.

Paul Carding is Professor of Voice Pathology in The Medical School at Newcastle University and Clinical Head of the Speech, Voice and Swallowing Department at Freeman University Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. He is also is national clinical advisor to Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and voice consultant to The Royal Shakespeare Company. Paul is also national advisor to Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists with regards to research strategy and evidence based practice.
He has published extensively in many aspects of voice pathology including over 100 peer-reviewed articles and several books. Paul’s main research interests are concerned with voice pathology diagnosis and management, treatment effectiveness and outcome measurement. He holds a number of prestigious research grants including projects funded by The Welcomme Trust, MRC and Cancer UK.
Paul is a Course Director for the Masters Clinical Research Programme (Dysphonia and Dysphagia) at Newcastle University and is currently supervising 6 Ph.D students.
