Patient quote

"I have had a fairly serious operation and will require some further radiotherapy.  I am now well on the way to recovery and it is entirely down to the wonderful treatment that I have experienced from Mr Paleri down to the lady Pam who cleaned my cublicle every day with a cheery hello.  I cannot express my gratitude strongly enough".  Mr AFS

Ear Nose & Throat Service (ENT)

Northern Head and Neck Cancer Unit

Contact: (0191) 213 7454 - Sheila Fellows, Head and Neck Cancer Service Co-ordinator

The Northern Head and Neck Cancer Unit is the second largest unit of its kind in the UK treating over 250 new patients every year.  Our highly specialised head and neck cancer team is committed to giving you the most advanced and effective treatment possible. We led the way, for example, in the UK in the development of a multidisciplinary approach to this extremely complex type of cancer care.

The clinical team is made up of ENT surgeons, working closely with colleagues from restorative dentistry, plastic and reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery, as well as cancer specialists with a particular expertise in head and neck cancers. The service is also supported by speech, swallowing and language therapists, dieticians and a palliative care team, including a Macmillan Head and Neck Nurse. Our goal is to provide you with expert guidance and support throughout your treatment journey.

Specialist care with a personal touch

Surgical treatment is based at the Freeman Hospital and ranges from endoscopic to major tumour surgery and includes reconstructive procedures. Our surgical team is highly experienced across all procedures and benefits from access to advanced technological equipment, including a variety of lasers.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment takes place at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, which moved to brand new, state-of-the-art facilities at the Freeman Hospital in 2008.

Our goal is to help you lead as normal a life as possible, so rehabilitation is a key part of your treatment plan from the very earliest stages. We provide therapy and have specialist equipment to help retrain your voice, breathing and swallowing, and offer a surgical voice restoration service if you need a laryngectomy.

We have strong links to the local laryngectomy support group - you can contact them at: talk.nela@blueyonder.co.uk
