Ear Nose & Throat Service (ENT)

Children's ENT Service

Contact: (0191) 223 1553 - Sister S Bradley, Paediatric Nurse Practitioner

We recognise that Children’s ENT needs often differ from adults’, so we’ve established a dedicated ENT service and ward specifically for younger patients, from newborn to 16 years old. This means that our highly skilled surgeons are not only experts in treating children’s ENT problems, but they also understand the worries that children – and their parents – often have.

Our ENT service includes a pre-admission assessment service to help young surgery patients understand more about their stay and make their time in hospital less daunting. And we have a play specialist who uses play and games to help younger children understand why they are in hospital.

From common childhood ailments to more complex conditions

We deliver a full range of services to treat common childhood ENT complaints such as: persistently runny or blocked noses, breathing problems, throat infections, nasal speech and snoring. These are often caused by recurrent infections, such as colds, adenoidal problems, an allergic lining of the nose (called rhinitis), or allergies such as hayfever.

Children also commonly suffer from airway and food passage problems, and our team provides a range of treatments for these, whether it is persistent hoarseness, coughing and drooling, or just inquisitive toddlers getting things stuck up their nose!

For hearing problems, our paediatric audiology service provides hearing assessments for children, including those with multiple disabilities or at risk of permanent hearing loss.

Our expert clinicians also deliver more specialised treatment for less common conditions such as neck tumours, and sinus and neck infections. They are also often asked to add their expertise in the treatment of other illnesses that have an impact on ENT conditions.
