  • Biography

    I graduated in 1992 from Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School after school and childhood in Cramlington.

    My specialist training in geriatrics and general medicine was in the North of England, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia, where I developed the first falls and syncope service for Western Sydney.

    Research – PhD awarded in May 2006 on falls in older people. I remain involved in clinical research in this field and have developed collaborative working partnerships with the ambulance services and social services in Newcastle to help reduce falls.

    I was appointed as a consultant in 2005 and divide my clinical time between Falls and Syncope Service clinics at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and acute and rehabilitation care for older people at the Freeman Hospital.

     I have additional interests and responsibilities in medical education and was appointed in 2010 as Assistant Director of Medical Education for the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

    I graduated from Baghdad University in 1997, started training in the UK in 2000 and completed specialist training in general and geriatric medicine in 2009.  I am currently working as a Consultant in acute medicine, orthogeriatrics & falls, and syncope service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.  I am the Assessment Suite lead for teaching and organiser for medical ground round meetings, as well as Associate Clinical Lecturer with Newcastle University Medical School.  My main aim in practice is the prevention as well as treatment of diseases and the promotion of health and independence.

  • Biography

    I qualified in medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993.  I subsequently undertook specialist training in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine in the Northern Deanery and appointed as a Consultant in Newcastle in 2006.

    My research interests include the assessment of autonomic disorders and the investigation of falls and syncope.

    I am an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University.

    I am a clinical academic who has a clinical and research interest in the symptoms of fatigue.  I have a background in investigating and managing fatigue in chronic diseases, including liver disease, renal disease and chronic fatigue syndrome.  I am a member of the Falls and Syncope Service team and predominantly see patients with autonomic dysfunction including POTS and VVW.

  • Biography

    I am a Newcastle Graduate and apart from a year spent in Phoenix, trained in the North East, gaining my Consultant post in 2002.  I work in acute medicine and older people's medicine and have a special interest in investigation and treatment of falls and blackouts in adult patients of all ages.  During my training I spent three years in full time research gaining my PhD and am now a senior lecturer at Newcastle University's Institute for Aging and Health.  My research interests lie mainly in helping develop new ways of understanding and treating patients with falls and blackouts.  In 2012 I was appointed to the role of Clinical Director for the Directorate of Medicine.

  • Biography

    I was appointed as a Consultant Geriatrician in 2002, having trained in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham and with a background research interest in Prevention of Falls in Older People with Cognitive Impairment and Dementia. 

    Falls prevention has continued to be my special interest.  I also have in-patient rehabilitation beds on Cherryburn Ward at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality and am responsible for the Consultant Led Continuing Care Beds at Wheatfield Court Care Home. 

    I Chair the Regional Falls Prevention Task group. 

    I have close working links with the HealthWORKS Staying Steady Community Exercise Programme (I Chair the steering group), the Newcastle Care Homes Project led by GP Colleagues and the North East Ambulance Service Falls Referral Programme. 

    I maintain a low-key-falls-related research interest.
