Gynaecology

Northern Centre for Gynaecological Surgery

We provide a wide range of gynaecological surgery for women in Newcastle and across the north of England.

Our services include:

  • one-stop gynaecology diagnostic clinics
  • outpatient surgical treatment
  • advanced minimally-invasive surgery for all aspects of gynaecology.

Quality, dignity and respect

Based at the RVI in Newcastle, the centre is the biggest purpose-built diagnostic and therapy unit for women’s health in the north.

We provide high quality surgery for women in a clean and modern environment, and we treat all our patients with a high level of respect, dignity and understanding.

We are one of a small number of nationally-recognised centres for endometriosis management and surgery in the country, and we also have British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy accreditation.

Our services

Some of the main services we provide include treatment for:

We run many outpatient sedation and local anaesthetic clinics, all designed to ensure that our patients can be treated quickly and effectively – often without the need for an overnight stay.

Da Vinci robotRobotic surgery

Our surgeons use a ‘da Vinci Si Robot’ to carry out some of our surgical procedures.

Using the robot means that surgery is ‘minimally invasive’ – we make small incisions rather than larger cuts to carry out the operation, which means minimum damage to healthy tissue.

We use the Da Vinci robot particularly for targeting cancer of the womb, as it helps to speed up recovery time for patients, and means they spend less time in hospital.

Many of our other surgical procedures are carried out with laparoscopic equipment which is less invasive and can mean that you can come into hospital for your operation, and leave on the same day.

Who you might meet

The centre is led by consultant gynaecologists who work with other doctors and nurses to provide treatment for women with as little intervention as possible. Our team includes:

  • consultant gynaecological surgeons
  • specialist nurses
  • healthcare assistants
  • centre support staff.

You can identify our staff by their uniforms.

Research

Our staff work on a wide variety and number of research projects and trials. If you come to the centre, you might be asked to take part in research which could help your and other patients’ treatment - it is entirely up to you whether you want to get involved.

For more details about research, speak to your doctor or nurse at the centre.
