The North of England’s Infection and Tropical Medicine Service is located at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and is one of the largest and most highly respected units of its kind in the UK. Run by an experienced team of clinicians and nursing practitioners we provide expert care and treatment for patients with a wide range of infections and tropical diseases. This includes access to highly specialised isolation facilities for extremely contagious viruses.
Newcastle is the region’s principal provider of high quality and dedicated care for patients diagnosed with HIV and AIDS and our clinicians work closely with colleagues in other clinical specialities to ensure that each and every patient we see gets the best possible care in a safe and reassuring environment. We run a wide range of clinics to assess and investigate infectious diseases in our dedicated outpatient department which has now moved to Ward 19 New Victoria Wing at the RVI.
We are one of only two centres in the UK with responsibility for a High Secure Infectious Diseases Unit – a highly specialised isolation facility for patients with dangerously contagious viruses such as Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) who may be referred to our care from anywhere in the world. This Unit is supported by specially trained nurses and has extremely high safety-level laboratory facilities (known as Category 4) suitable for handling samples and specimens of high-risk agents including VHFs such as Lassa and Ebola viruses.
Our clinicians provide expert advice regarding the clinical care of patients with known or potentially infectious diseases. This includes problems encountered with the control of infection and guidance for clinical colleagues who are looking after patients receiving treatment which can result in the immune system having reduced ability to fight infection (known as immunosuppression). This sometimes happens during intensive treatment regimes such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
We work closely with other clinical colleagues who specialize in conditions caused by infectious diseases affecting areas such as the liver and sexual health and we hold joint clinics so you can be seen at one appointment by more than one specialist.
We also work very closely with families affected by infectious diseases and have an HIV specialist nurse who is specially trained to look after children and provide support and advice to parents and carers.
Our clinicians work very closely with national research agencies such as the Medical Research Centre Network Clinical Trials which means we are the very leading edge of specialized research developing medication for complex conditions including HIV.
We can accept a direct referral from your own GP, or doctor from another hospital which may not have the necessary expertise, from anywhere in the northern region including Cumbria, Teesside and some parts of Yorkshire.
