Parents with new baby

Having a baby is one of the most amazing, life changing events you will ever experience and our top rated Maternity Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care during this important transition to family life.

We offer a complete range of maternity care, from midwife-led care for women with straightforward and healthy pregnancies right through to the highest level of very specialist care for women who are found to have problems that need close attention. This includes immediate access to a full range of support services including obstetric anaesthetists and specialists in medical conditions during pregnancy.

And we also offer a number of education courses for expectant parents to help them prepare for their new arrival or arrivals.

Our Certificate of Commitment

UNICEF Baby Friendly

The Maternity Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary has recently been awarded the Certificate of Commitment as recognition that they are working towards achieving the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Maternity award. They are currently working through the staged approach to full accreditation which supports pregnant women and new parents in their chosen method of feeding their baby.

Further information can be obtained from Lynne McDonald, Infant Feeding Coordinator, Telephone (0191) 2820437 or e mail at lynne.mcdonald@nuth.nhs.uk.

Specialist care at the North East's top Maternity Unit

Expecting a baby also brings many choices, from pushchairs to pacifiers, new parents are offered an incredible range of products and services. But one of the first choices you will have to make is also one of the most important - where to have your baby. And if you do decide to have your baby delivered in hospital, which one to choose.

Choose the RVI and you'll be in good company. More babies begin life here than at any other hospital in the North East - over 6,500 last year alone.  And even though we see so many mums and babies we're still committed to providing the very highest levels of care.  Baby in Special Care Baby Unit

Mums can be reassured by the fact that the RVI is one of only two hospitals in the North East to offer consultant and midwifery led care - this means that although most babies are born without the need for a doctor, our Maternity Unit has a specialist doctor on site at all times should they be needed.

So when you choose us you are in the safest possible hands, whether you need an epidural to ease pain during labour, or more specialist care such as an emergency caesarean section.
