Patient quote

"All of the topics we discussed gave us confidence and reassurance. The teaching was at a good level for me - I feel much more positive and aware of the choices on offer at the RVI".

Courses and events

Pregnancy is a time of many changes with lots of new information to take in. To prepare for labour, birth and the early days of being a parent, we offer a range of free sessions which may give you more details to make informed choices.

In the Newcastle Birthing Centre we have a purpose-built classroom where we offer a session on labour, birth and pain relief, and also what to do when things don't quite go according to plan. This session is available for all women planning to have their baby in Newcastle - either in the Newcastle Birthing Centre or in the main obstetric unit, and is taught by community and hospital-based staff.

         Maternity Education Room

We have recently introduced a session called "Calm and Relaxed for labour and birth" which is a valuable session focused on learning skills to enable women to stay calmer and more relaxed throughout labour and the birth process

We offer regular sessions on 'Using Water for Labour and Birth' and in Newcastle women are using the Birthing pools most days.

We have sessions on breastfeeding either for ladies only - which are held in hospital and community venues. We  also provide partners with information to support the continued success of breastfeeding, so we offer hospital-based couples breastfeeding sessions.

Outside of Newcastle

We recommend that if you live outside Newcastle, you should try to book breastfeeding sessions in your local area so you can find out about your local support networks. All services near you should offer these sessions. If you are however unable to access breastfeeding sessions locally please contact us and we can invite you to attend at the RVI.

We also offer a session called New Baby Practical which offers information on life with a new baby. Some of these classes take place in the Newcastle Birthing Centre, and for those women who live in Newcastle they also take place in community settings.

For those of you interested in homebirth we have a homebirth special interest group which takes place every few months. This is for people who are interested in having a baby at home and is often a chance to meet with those who have had a homebirth. The session is run by our community midwifery team

For more information please contact Senior Midwifery Sister Chris Saunders during office hours on 01912821836 or email :

We have extended the services on offer to include sessions run by private teachers. This is an exciting time for the unit and we are now working to increase the sessions available. The classes do have a charge and are booked via the individual teachers.

As we have a commitment to equal access, all of the teachers offer us free places. So if there are classes you would like to attend but are not able to fund, please ask your community midwife to contact us. More information about these new services will follow as the classes become available.

As we get a very high number of requests for our services, please book early.

We do not encourage children to attend any of our sessions. If this will be a problem for you please contact us and we can see if we can accomodate your requests on an individual basis.
