Medics praised as 'miracle' baby goes from strength to strength
In a national review of maternity hospitals by the Healthcare Commission, the Newcastle Hospitals was ranked in the top 25% "best performing" hospitals in England.
Each hospital was scored between 1 and 5 (inclusive) for each of 25 key indicators across maternity services. Average performance scored a 3 with better performing hospitals getting a 4 or 5 and poorer performers a score of 1 or 2. The indicators ranged from the type of scans women receive to staffing levels and the number of times a woman has contact with a midwife after going home.

The scores for each hospital across these 25 indicators were then totalled and the hospitals grouped into 4 categories to give an overall rating:
The Commission ranked 43% of maternity services (63 hospitals) as "least well performing" or "fair performing" , with 32% (or 47 hospitals) as “better performing" hospitals.
Newcastle was one of only 38 hospitals across England (25% of the total) to be ranked as “best performing”.
