This information explains about the additional scan that has been arranged for you following the complications that occurred in your previous pregnancy.

This scan is very similar to the routine 20 week scan. On this occasion, we will be measuring the blood flow to the placenta and also the blood flowing through the umbilical cord from the placenta to the baby. This gives us information about the baby’s growth and may help to predict the function of the placenta.

This is an abdominal scan, carried out in the Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) on the second floor of the Leazes Wing.

• You will not need a full bladder
• You do not need to undress
• Your partner or a companion can stay with you if you wish
• The scan will be carried out by a Midwife/sonographer and will take about 10 minutes
• You will be told the findings of the scan and a written report will be added to your notes
• Following the scan, a plan of management for the rest of your pregnancy will be discussed with you. Staff at the FMU will be happy to answer any questions you have.
