Using science to tackle health issues

Science and technology are at the heart of the modern healthcare service.

The Medical Physics Department develops and uses the latest science and technology to help treat patients across the Newcastle Hospitals and northern England. We help medical staff to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients using new equipment and techniques in hospitals and in the community.

Our services

Based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, we are the largest medical physics department in the UK, and our services include:

Regional centre

We work with services right across Newcastle Hospitals and we are also a regional centre of scientific, technical and community support.

Our diagnostic and community services are also available to anyone who lives in and around the North of England. While our highly specialist services may be offered elsewhere in the UK.

Patients are usually referred to us by doctors within the Newcastle Hospitals, but we also receive referrals from other hospitals if they do not have the necessary expertise in their area.

We are dedicated to providing a safe, high quality service to all patients. Our specialist clinical scientists and engineers use their expert knowledge to develop innovative technologies to help treat patients with a wide range of conditions.
