Newcastle and York NICE External Assessment Centre (EAC)

The Medical Physics Directorate includes one of four NICE External Assessment Centres (EACs) in the UK.

The EAC is a partnership between Newcastle Hospitals Trust and the York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC). We are commissioned by NICE to provide independent assessment of the evidence for innovative medical devices and associated economic analysis of the impact of such technology adoption in the NHS. Scientists, economists and engineers at the centre will also work with NICE to progress further research on promising technologies where current evidence is limited.

The evaluation group at the Freeman Hospital has been involved in medical device assessment for 30 years. Our current role as an assessment centre for NICE complements other activities in Medical Physics, including developing innovative medical devices.

Our partnership with YHEC combines their links with NICE and health economics expertise with our device evaluation and device development knowledge, to offer an all-encompassing EAC to the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme (MTEP) at NICE, and a comprehensive range of skills in technology assessment to other customers.

At our launch event, Professor Carole Longson, Director of the Centre for Health Technology Evaluation at NICE, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the new joint external assessment centre based at Newcastle and York. Their input to the production of NICE medical technology guidance will be essential, providing independent assessment of the evidence available for devices going through the NICE evaluation process. We look forward to working with the centre, and benefitting from their combined technical and economics expertise in supporting the development of robust guidance for the NHS.”
