Contact: (0191) 282 1751 - Tracy Mawson, Advanced Trauma Nurse Specialist
We have an Acute/Trauma Orthopaedic Nurse Specialist Service based within the Trauma Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) which is run by Tracy Mawson who is an Advanced Nurse Specialist for Trauma Orthopaedics.
The Unit takes both children and adults who have suffered an injury. Patients will either have surgery, or non-operative treatment, depending upon their clinical condition and individual needs.
A multidisciplinary team approach is adopted, taking into consideration all aspects of patient care, to facilitate a speedy and safe recovery. Patients, carers, and relatives are actively involved in every aspect of this process.
The team provide specialist advice and support and liaise with colleagues working in the community setting, helping to ensure continuity in your care when you leave the hospital. Patients are referred to other specialist services as necessary, for example; the falls service, for osteoporosis assessment, elderly care and rehabilitation services.
Tracy co-ordinates the care of patients admitted with a fractured neck of femur (hip), ensuring that they have their operation as soon as possible and they are cared for on the ward to the highest standards. When discharged she then reviews them in a nurse led clinic.
Clinical guidelines have been developed, based upon the best evidence available, and audits are regularly undertaken to evaluate care and improve services.
