Our Paediatric Orthopaedic Service is lead by two experienced paediatric orthopaedic surgeons and is based in the Great North Children's Hospital. Here our specialist staff deal with disorders and injuries to muscles, tendons, joints, bones and nerves in children and young people.
We’ve invested considerably in our paediatric orthopaedic services to make sure that our young patients receive the best possible care. The unit, which has specially trained clinical staff and a dedicated paediatric intensive care unit, is one of very few in the UK which meets new government regulations on orthopaedic services for children. Our depth of expertise and quality of service is reflected in the increasing number of patients that are referred to us from other hospitals in the region.
Specialist care for our younger patients
As well as a wide range of surgery, such as spinal correction for scoliosis, fracture fixation and corrective surgery for Perthes’ disease, our specialists provide expert advice and guidance on managing chronic conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and congenital dislocation of the hip.
We also work in partnership with the Northern Genetic Service, based at the Centre for Life in Newcastle, pooling our expertise to deliver combined clinics for inherited conditions such as skeletal dysplasia, and we collaborate closely with our bone and soft tissue tumour specialists, to ensure that our younger cancer patients benefit from the latest all-round paediatric care.
