The Metabolic Bone Unit is an important element of our Musculoskeletal services, providing expert advice, investigation and treatment for patients with osteoporosis (fragile bones) and other metabolic bone diseases such as Paget’s Disease.
The unit is based in the Musculoskeletal Outpatient Department at Freeman Hospital and holds a range of specialist clinics led by Professor Roger Francis, Consultant Physician, and staffed by a team of Osteoporosis Specialist Nurses as well as other doctors and a physiotherapist with expertise in metabolic bone disease.
Specialist investigative techniques allowing rapid diagnosis
When appropriate a Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan is offered to diagnose osteoporosis, assess future fracture risk and help identify whether or not you would benefit from preventative treatment.
