The North of England Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service is run from the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary and provides the highest level of expertise and specialised care for both adults and children with this complex form of cancer (also known as sarcoma). We are one of only six major treatment centres in the country for bone and soft tissue tumours and see patients from as far afield as the Scottish Borders and Yorkshire.
Our service is run by a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled clinicians including orthopaedic surgeons, plastic and general surgeons who work closely with specialists from oncology (chemotherapy and radiotherapy), radiology (x-ray and scans) and pathology (tests and investigations) teams meeting weekly to ensure that you benefit from the most appropriate treatment tailored to your specific needs.
Speed of diagnosis is often crucial to the successful treatment of sarcoma and we run a fast-track referral system to ensure you should be seen within two weeks
We also have a specialist Macmillan Nurse Specialist trained in cancer care. She will stay in close contact with you from diagnosis throughout your treatment, providing expert counselling and guidance to you and your carers.
We also run a support group for anybody affected by sarcoma, and a helpline if you need any additional advice or just someone to talk to.
