Ward 17 Freeman Hospital

Contact: (0191) 213 7017 - Sister M Johnston

Ward 17 is a children's orthopaedic ward which provides care and treatment for young people until leaving school both before and after elective (planned) orthopaedic surgery. Many patients we see have varying complex needs.

Patients are admitted for investigations, as well as for conservative (non-surgical) treatment, for example traction, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, and elective surgery. This ranges from day case and short stay surgery, to more complex spinal and hip surgery for conditions such as scoliosis, Perthes' disease, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and congenital dislocation of the hip.

The ward philosophy is very much based on partnership in care and family members and carers are actively encouraged to participate as they feel able.

There is an open visiting policy on the ward in agreement with the nurse in charge of the ward and parents may stay as long they wish with their children with overnight facilities available.
