Ward 17 is an adult orthopaedic surgical ward at Newcastle General Hospital which provides care for patients having elective (planned) orthopaedic operations such as wrist, elbow, foot and ankle surgery, as well as short stay spinal procedures, for example injections for lower back pain.

We also look after some patients here who have had surgery to the face and jaw (oral and maxillo facial surgery) who need to stay in hospital overnight.

Staff you are likely to meet

The clinical team on Ward 17 consists of orthopaedic surgeons, specialist nurses, junior medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other support staff.

Things you need to know

  • The ward nursing staff are divided into "teams" with the sister in overall charge of the ward. You will have a named nurse who will be responsible for your care during your stay. Please ask this nurse if you have any questions.
  • As we have so many patients coming in and going home it may be necessary to rearrange the ward to make way for new patients coming in for operations. We apologise for any inconvenience should this affect you.
