Ward 19 Freeman Hospital

Contact: (0191) 213 7019 - Sister Joanne Carr

Ward 19 at the Freeman Hospital has two functions:

  • an adult orthpaedic surgical ward - providing care for patients who have undergone elective (planned) orthopaedic surgery such as hip and knee replacements, arthroplasties and foot and ankle surgery.  We have six consultants based on this ward specialising in joint replacement surgery.
  • a rheumatology inpatient and day unit - providing care and treatment for adult patients with a range of rheumatological diseases. We administer various treatments including Infliximab and Rituximab for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and lupus. We also administer chemotherapy for scleroderma and other connective tissue diseases.

Things you need to know

  • The Rheumatology Day Unit offers time and privacy for education and counselling provided by our specialist nurses.
  • The Day Unit also has facilities for patients to meet up and discuss their condition and treatments together, providing support for each other.
  • As we have so many patients coming in and going home it may be necessary for us to rearrange the ward to make way for new patients coming in for operations. We apologise for any inconvenience should this affect you.
