Ward 20 is an Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit for female patients receiving continuing rehabilitation care following treatment for a traumatic injury.
The aim of this unit is to promote an environment that encourages each patient to be as independent as they can be from their day of admission and regain confidence which may have been affected by their injury.
As rehabilitation progresses our staff reduce assistance in physical care while increasing emotional and psychological support to help patients to become as self sufficient as possible before going home.

Ward 20 is based on the first floor at the Newcastle General Hospital. To find us:
- Come through the Main Entrance of Newcastle General Hospital.
- Take the first turn on your left if you would like to take the lift up to the next floor, or
- Take the first turn on your right and take the stairs up to the next floor where you will see Ward 20 on your left hand side.
Staff you are likely to meet
The clinical team on Ward 20 consists of orthopaedic surgeons, specialist nurses, junior medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other support staff.
Things you need to know
- It would help us to know what particular personal needs you have, any equipment that you wish to bring with you and any equipment, which you would like us to, provide for you. Please let the ward sister know by letter or telephone, so that preparations can be made.
- If your admission was at short notice, the nurse will discuss your individual needs on admission.
- A successful discharge takes careful planning. To make sure we make the right arrangements, it is a good idea to start planning early. Your care needs will be assessed during your stay in hospital to prepare you and your carers for your discharge home.
- Our team - physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and others will be involved in your discharge. You may be discharged with the Orthopaedic Discharge Team which provides two week period of support with nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy input. The services of this team are available to those patients living in the Newcastle area. Ask your named nurse about the arrangements they are making for you.
