Contact: (0191) 282 6023 - Charge Nurse Mark Kidd

Ward 23 is an adult orthopaedic surgical ward which provides care and treatment for adult patients who have suffered a traumatic injury. In particular we specialize in looking after patients who have been admitted with a traumatic injury affecting the spine.

We also look after patients with traumatic injuries to the face and jaw (maxillo facial injuries) and provide close overnight monitoring for patients who have been referred from the Accident and Emergency Department with minor head and chest injuries

There are ten consultants based on this ward and we have two Trauma Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioners who work closely with the unit.

Staff you are likely to meet

The clinical team on Ward 23 consists of orthopaedic surgeons, specialist nurses, junior medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other support staff.

Things you need to know

  • A successful discharge takes careful planning. To make sure we make the right arrangements, it is a good idea to start planning early. Your care needs will be assessed during your stay in hospital to prepare you and your carers for your discharge home.
  • A team of staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, etc, may be involved in your discharge. You may be discharged with the Orthopaedic Discharge Team which provides two week period of support with nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy input.
  • The services of the Orthopaedic Discharge Team are available to those patients living in the Newcastle area. Ask your named nurse about the arrangements they are making for you.
  • As we have so many patients coming in and going home it may be necessary to rearrange the ward to make way for new patients coming in for operations. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
