Neurosciences

The Regional Neurosciences Service is one of the top regional units in the UK providing a comprehensive range of specialist tests, treatments and procedures for all types of neurological conditions involving the brain and nervous system.

Treatment is available to anyone who lives in and around the North East of England but some highly specialised services are provided for patients from all areas of the UK and sometimes from overseas.

Neurosciences is made up of the following departments

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neurophysiology

Most services are based at Newcastle General Hospital but Neurology and Neurophysiology also have facilities at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.  The Directorate will be moving to new state-of-the-art facilities in a new unit on the Royal Victoria Infirmary site in 2009.

Each department is led by highly experienced clinicians specialising in different areas of neurosciences supported by teams of nurses, radiographers, neurophysiology technicians and other healthcare professionals to provide a safe and caring high quality service to those that need to use it.

Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology consists of nine Consultant Neurologists, supported by a specialised Neurology ward staffed by specially trained neurology nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The full range of neurological disability is covered by this team, with a national and international reputation in many fields.
