Our Service

We have a specialist Head Injury Service, based at the Regional Neurosciences Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, which is committed to providing comprehensive support to all adults, and their families, who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Specialist clinical support for all patients and their families

The service is run by a Clinical Specialist Nurse, Helen Hastie, who meets all patients and their families upon admission to the Centre.  Helen can provide much needed support and help reduce anxiety, by explaining the nature of the injuries involved and discussing any potential behavioural changes which are known to arise following a head injury. She will also discuss the planned care pathway and discharge arrangements for each individual patient, to help ensure there is clear understanding of what to expect over the following days or weeks.

Ensuring continuity of care

 Helen liaises closely with other health and social care organisations, such as community rehabilitation services, to ensure continuity of care at all times. We also run a specialist Head Injury Clinic to enable regular monitoring of your recovery and to allow you to raise any concerns or queries.

Patients with more severe head injuries, requiring longer term rehabilitation, are often referred to the Walkergate Park Hospital for Neurorehabilitation and contact details for providers of these specialist services in the community, can be provided early on.
