The Neuro-Oncology team is a regional service made up of specialists from the Neurosciences Department and the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment at Newcastle General Hospital. Patients are referred by GPs and local hospital consultants, usually directly to a neurosurgeon, oncologist or neurologist.
We adopt a multidisciplinary approach, with the neuro-oncology team meeting each week to discuss new patients and review proposed treatment plans. The core of this multidisciplinary team is made up of neurosurgeons, oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists and a clinical nurse specialist, with input from neurologists. This team is supported by other healthcare professionals who may be involved in your care, such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and social workers.
We also have a Macmillian Neuro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist who provides professional support and advice for you and your family on how to manage your symptoms, if you have been diagnosed with a brain tumour.
We have a large clinical trials unit, which means that our patients can be offered the opportunity to try potential new therapies for their condition and are often the first to benefit from ground-breaking new treatments.
