An E.M.G. records how well your muscles and nerves are functioning.

No specific preparation is required beforehand.

Small electric pulses are used to study the nerves, and if muscles need to be examined as well, this is done using a fine needle.

The tests are carried out by a doctor and usually take 30 – 60 minutes. They may be a little uncomfortable but are not harmful in any way. The tests will be fully explained to you at the time by the doctor carrying out the tests.

There are no side effects.

The doctor will interpret the results and a report will be forwarded to the hospital doctor who requested the investigation. You will be advised how long this will take.

There is some variation in this procedure depending on whether you are seen as an inpatient or as an outpatient.
