MUGA stands for Multiple Gated Acquisition Scan.  It is a scan of the heart. It provides a moving image of the heart to assess the health of the heart's major chambers.

Before commencing a new treatment, such as Mitoxantrone or other forms of chemotherapy. It is essential that we check that your heart is healthy. Throughout treatment you will have repeated scans or similar tests on the heart.

There are no specific preparation requirements.

The scan involves an injection of radioactive substance into the bloodstream. The level of radiation given off by the injection into the bloodstream (known as labelled red cells). The flow of the labelled red cells through the heart chambers produces a moving image from the camera of how the heart is working.

The procedure takes up to 1 hour to complete.
