  • Biography

    I irained in Ireland, Australia and the North East, primarily in General and Colorectal Surgery. Subsequent interests have led to specialisation in the areas of complex inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and intestinal failure and the surgical care of these patients.

    Core member of Nutrition Multi-Disciplinary Team at both the Freeman Hospital and the RVI. Core member and surgical lead for IBD at Newcastle Hospitals.

    Research interests have included surgical complications, infection and sepsis.

    Instructor, Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient.

  • Biography

    I qualified in Medicine at the University of Nottingham Medical School.  I undertook postgraduate training as a junior doctor as part of the Manchester medical rotation.  I worked as a Specialist Registrar on the Northern Deanery (Newcastle) Gastroenterology rotation and am now dual certified in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine.  I am a certified endoscopist with full JAG accreditation.

    I am a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist based primarily at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.  I am the Clinical Lead for the Assessment Suite, which is a new state of the art facility, receiving and treating acutely unwell patients from the Emergency Department and from General Practice.  I also lead the RVI Nutrition Team and am part of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Team within our tertiary centre.  I am an investigator in several multi-centre trials aimed at providing better and more effective treatments for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. 

    I am also interested in medical education and am an Associate Lecturer with the University of Newcastle, teaching and tutoring undergraduate, as well as postgraduate students.

  • Biography

    Professor Manas was educated and trained in Cape Town, South Africa and completed fellowships at ‘Johns Hopkins - USA’ and ‘Paul-Brousse, Paris’. He was the recipient of the ’CJ Adams/Sandoz Traveling Fellowship’ to the UK in 1993 and joined the NHS at the Freeman Hospital in 1994.

    Professor Manas attained a personal chair in Transplantation at Newcastle University in  2007 and has been instrumental in successfully developing three super-regionally funded transplant programmes in the North East of England - namely: Liver, Pancreas and Islet transplantation – as well as establishing and managing Liver and Pancreas cancer surgery in Newcastle.

    Professor Manas is also a member of a number of national committees including NICE, Liver and Pancreas Advisory Groups, British Transplant Society and ELTA and was recently involved in re-designing the organ donor retrieval service on a national level. He is also Chair of the Transplant Surgeons Forum and has a well established national and international research reputation in primary liver cancer, radio-frequency ablation of liver tumours and liver transplantation for primary liver cancer.

    More recently Professor Manas has been developing the UK’s very first ‘Institute for Transplantation’ on the Freeman Hospital site – a fully integrated facility dedicated to all aspects of transplantation as well as fostering research and development all under one roof.

  • Biography

    I trained at Newcastle University and carried out postgraduate training in medicine and specialist gastroenterology training throughout the North East. I was appointed as a consultant in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in Newcastle in March 2014.

    My clinical interests include the care of patients with malnutrition, in particular patients with severe malnutrition, requiring parenteral nutrition (receiving nutrition via an infusion into a vein). I am part of the team which provides the home parenteral nutrition (HPN) service for adults living in the North East of England.

    I am a certified endoscopist with full JAG accreditation (ensuring the quality and safety of patient care), and perform gastrointestinal endoscopy at the Freeman Hospital.

  • Biography

    I trained in London and was a registrar and research fellow at the Royal Free Hospital.  I completed my postgraduate training in the Northern Region and was appointed as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in Newcastle in March 1998. 

    At the Freeman Hospital we have developed the specialist care of patients with severe malnutrition, especially those requiring parenteral nutrition (having nutrition via an infusion into a vein). 

    Research interests have also included the maintenance of bone health in patients with Crohn’s disease.  I have been involved in training registrars in gastroenterology as the Programme Director for the region and until April 2011 was the Clinical Director for medicine within the Trust.  In April 2011 I was appointed as Assistant Medical Director.
