Our Ophthalmology service, based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, is one of the largest in the UK, treating and caring for around 100,000 patients each year. We are a regional centre of excellence treating all types of common eye conditions in both adults and children, as well as providing a range of highly specialised and cutting-edge services. We also run an Eye Casualty service for patients with emergency eye problems.
We have around 200 highly specialised healthcare professionals, including national and international experts in their chosen fields. Through our collaboration with Newcastle University, we have a long tradition of being fore-runners in adopting innovative services, such as corneal transplant and the treatment of macular degeneration with photo dynamic therapy.
Our purpose-built modern unit in Claremont Wing at the RVI has state of the art diagnostic and treatment facilities for all types of medical and surgical conditions affecting the eye, including:
With most of our patients coming from across the North East, we work in close partnership with smaller, local hospitals to hold clinics there, closer to our patients homes.
Wherever you come from and whatever your condition, we are dedicated to giving a friendly, high quality and safe service to each and every patient who chooses to come to us.
