Ophthalmology (Eye Department)
Welcome to our Ophthalmology service, based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. It is one of the largest in the UK, treating and caring for well over 100,000 patients each year. We are a regional centre of excellence treating all types of common eye conditions in both adults and children both elective and emergency, as well as providing a range of highly specialised and cutting-edge services.
We have around 200 highly specialised healthcare professionals, including national and international experts in their chosen fields. Through our collaboration with Newcastle University, we have a long tradition of being fore-runners in adopting innovative services, such as corneal transplant and the treatment of macular degeneration with photo dynamic therapy.

Most of our patients come from across the North East so we work with smaller, local hospitals to hold clinics there, closer to our patients' homes. We provide clinics in:
