Dear Mr Cottrell
I would like to thank you, your surgical team and all the staff on Ward 20 for the very good care I received during my short stay before and after my eye operation on 12th November. I had an excellent experience of the NHS and can only say good things about every aspect of your department and the ancillary services. I have had reason to phone on two occasions since (just to have mind put at rest!) and have been very happy with the help and reassurance I have received. I hope that by 18th December, my second out-patient appointment, that everything has progressed satisfactorily and I will be able to fly on 23rd December, the short flight to Southampton.
Very many thanks and regards
Mrs MS
During the first part of this year, I have had cataract operations on both of my eyes at the RVI, which were extremely successful and for which I am most grateful.
The first was carried out by Mr Strong in January, and the second by Mr Kak in April. The results are truly amazing, and have greatly enhanced my quality of life.
I must pay tribute and give thanks to the whole of the Department’s team of medical and nursing staff, not forgetting the other vital support staff, administrative, porters and domestics, for their expert care and consideration to all the patients who were treated on the same occasions as myself.
I have no doubt that we did not receive any extra special treatment, the impression being that what we experienced is normal practice and an everyday occurrence.
Everything about the experience was superb – from initial reception through to discharge following the procedure.
We who live in the north east are very fortunate that are health care services are among the best in the country and that their direction, provision, and administration of the finite financial resources to fund them are in such capable hands.
Thank you for all you do and achieve.
Mr DB
I have been attending the Eye Department of the RVI for many years, initially under Mr Gillie and now under the care of Mr Birch. I continue to be impressed by the care I receive.
My second cataract was removed a week ago. All the staff worked extremely hard, dealing with many patients during the session. The provision of sandwiches, teas and coffee was much appreciated.
It is because of the hard work of the doctors and nurses that so many patients receive their treatment. We are lucky to have such an excellent eye department in Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

To the family of my donor - I am writing to thank you very sincerely for the gift of my new cornea.
Three years ago I contracted a very rare infection in my right eye. After many months of painful treatment, and thanks to the care of my excellent consultant, things began to improve. But the infection had left a large scar on the cornea which prevented me from seeing.
In April 2006 I was accepted onto the transplant list and at the beginning of April this year (2007) I had my graft. So far everything has gone very well with no sign of rejection. My sight is now greatly improved and hopefully when the graft has settled down I should be back to normal.
This would not have been possible without your agreement to donate the corneas of your family member. I will never know anything about that person or what happened to him or her, but I hope that the knowledge of the good that has come out of this, and of my gratitude, may help to ease the sorrow of your loss to some small degree.
Thank you again.
