Corneal Service

Corneal and External Eye Disease

The cornea is the window of the eye and conditions that affect it can therefore threaten the vision. A very wide range of conditions can affect people of all ages including dry eye, allergies, infections and degenerations.

Here in Newcastle we have a specialist team led by consultants who, together with nurse specialists, provide a full range of care for corneal and external eye conditions.

You can be referred to this service by your GP or by another hospital doctor who wishes a more specialist opinion. Your optometrist can also facilitate a referral. Specialist clinics are held in the Eye Department at the RVI, but this expertise is also available in Chester le Street and Shotley Bridge Hospital.

Pioneering Stem Cell Research

Under the leadership of Prof Figueiredo, a scientific team working for the past decade at the Centre for Life in Newcastle has been pioneering techniques in stem cell transplantation. Newcastle has been the first UK centre to develop these techniques which have already enabled many people who have lost sight from corneal disease to regain useful vision. Much of the funding for this research has come from money donated by patients through Newcastle Eye Centre's charity – Tynesight.

The work of this team continues to be at the forefront of corneal research in the UK. This means that patients attending this service may have the opportunity to try pioneering new treatments.
