Eye Casualty

Eye Casualty is based in the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department. All patients are encouraged to see their GP in the first instance who will refer you to our Eye Casualty or to A&E if felt appropriate. You can self refer to be seen here if your eye condition or injury is urgent however please check our opening hours, and if we are closed then please attend A&E.
On arrival you will be assessed by a member of our nursing staff and then seen by either a doctor, optician or another nurse, dependent upon your condition.

Eye Casualty is based in the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department in Claremont Wing at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. To find us:
- Come through the Claremont Wing entrance which is accessible from Queen Victoria Road, via the entrance to the Multi Storey Car Park.
- Follow the signs for Claremont Wing on the corridor which takes you straight ahead, turning left and then right until you reach the entrance of the Eye Outpatient Department.
- Go to the main reception desk on your left hand side where staff will direct you to the right clinic area.

Eye Casualty opening times are as follows:
- Monday to Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm
- Saturday 9.00am -11.30am (urgent cases only)
If you have an eye injury or problem and need to be seen outside of these times please go to the Accident and Emergency Department at the Newcastle General Hospital where you will be assessed by a member of the staff there.
Staff you are likely to meet
The clinic team is led by Sister Hope and is made up of doctors, nurses, opticians, orthoptists, medical photographers, visual field technicians, nursery nurses and other support staff.
All the consultants in the department have highly skilled doctors working with them. Although your appointment is with a named consultant you may be seen by a member of their team although your consultant will be closely monitoring your care.
Things you need to know
- There is a special area in outpatients for children with a supervised play area with toys, and a mother and baby room. Staff here have been specially trained to care for children.
- Public telephones in reception and main waiting area.
- There are vending machines in the outpatient waiting area for hot and cold drinks anda trolley service selling drinks and snacks is also available from 11:00am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday.
