Pharmacy Services

Education and Training

We are committed to training the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians of tomorrow. It’s why we have developed close links with local universities and colleges – from providing undergraduate pharmacy students at Sunderland University with practice-based experience to supplement their degree and a similarly comprehensive two-year vocation training programme for student pharmacy technicians, affiliated with Tyne Metropolitan College, to supporting junior medical staff training in collaboration with Newcastle University’s Medical School. Each year, we also provide a comprehensive pre-registration training programme for pharmacy graduates, covering all aspects of hospital pharmacy practice, including the RPSGB required cross-sector placement.

A Rotational Pharmacists Programme Information Pack is also available - click on the pdf link below for a printable version.

Pre-Registration Pharmacist Programme

In Newcastle we regard the pre-registration year as an important beginning to an enjoyable career. As well as providing skills training to cover key elements of the RPSGB competencies we present trainees with opportunities to experience a broad range of clinical areas many of which are regional specialties. Most importantly we believe that your pre-registration year should be enjoyable and well supported and that is why we have dedicated pre-registration support.

For further information about the pre-registration programme and/or a visit to the department please contact Julie Fletcher, Principal Education and Training Pharmacist (contact details below).

Vacational Experience for Pharmacy Undergraduates

We offer approximately 7 four week placements each summer between the months of June and September. During the four week placement we aim to give pharmacy undergraduates an insight into the workings of all the operational areas of a hospital pharmacy as well as experience some of our clinical specialties.

If you wish to be considered for one of our vacational placements please send a brief CV by the end of November to Julie Fletcher, Principal Education and Training Pharmacist or Emma Mills, Principal Education and Training technician (contact details below).

Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians

The application process for the regional pre-registration pharmacy technician 2 year training programme is advertised in the local press and appears on the NHS jobs site (http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/) in February or March each year.

The vocational training programme consists of day-release to Tyne Metropolitan College to undertake the BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services combined with work-based training and assessment to gain a level 3 NVQ in Pharmacy Services.

If you have 4 GCSEs grades C or above (English, Maths, Double Science (counts as 2), Chemistry and Biology or equivalents) and you are looking for an interesting and varied patient focused career and would like to combine further studies with on the job training please contact Emma Mills Principal Education and Training Technician (contact details below) for further information.

Pharmacy Technicians

At Newcastle, technicians are encouraged and supported to further their career and development through in-house training, regional courses and externally provided specialist training.

Pharmacy Assistants

Pharmacy assistants are enrolled on a level 2 NVQ in Pharmacy Services depending on their area of employment. All assistants are encouraged to complete training to equip them with the required skills and knowledge to confidently and competently carry out their role.

Many of our assistants have been motivated by the varied and stimulating environment in the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals that they have returned to further education in order to progress on to the Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician programme.

In-house training

Our in-house training for all grades of pharmacy staff helps them to develop and progress in their roles, contributing to a wide range of services both within and outside the department, and providing invaluable support to the professional and technical staff within the department.

In addition to the technical and professional roles there is a wide range of clerical and support roles. Vacancies for these posts are advertised on http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/ or visit our Vacancies Page.
