Newcastle Specials is a MHRA approved pharmacy production unit, manufacturing unlicensed specials for the Trust, and supplying a range of high quality cost-effective products to other NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, retail pharmacies and commercial organisations.
Based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne, it boasts a purpose-built facility and NHS lead unit status in the North East of England. Our talented team of over 40 highly experienced staff manufacture more than 180,000 individual dose units every year.
With four specialist manufacturing zones, including two for aseptics with isolator technology, we perform numerous types of manufacture including Non Sterile, Cytotoxic Chemotherapy, Parenteral Nutrition bags, Centralised Intravenous Additives Service, as well as large and small volume Terminally Sterilised and Aseptic Manufacture.
Our technical team works alongside expert clinicians to support a wide range of patient needs, delivering high-quality manufactured product to exacting requirements – from highly specialist medicines to high risk patient ready IVs.

We are committed to the manufacture of high quality medicines and continually review our product range to ensure they meet specialist requirements and deliver value for money, for our Trust and external customers.
As part of our commitment to quality standards, the unit has its own well-equipped onsite Quality Control laboratory which is involved environmental testing, as well as checking the quality of all raw materials and containers and performing assays on manufactured medicines. Newcastle Specials operates under a Specials Licence, IMP Licence and Wholesale Dealer’s Licence.
All our products are listed on medicines information website www.pro-file.nhs.uk, the Pro-File database which helps users identify and source unlicensed specials. Please note access is restricted to registered NHS pharmacy staff.
