Genital skin problems
I went to school in Newcastle and trained at UCH London Medical School. I trained in London and Newcastle and did research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London. I obtained a Consultant Dermatology post at Sunderland Royal Infirmary then moved to Newcastle in 1994.
I am Clinical Director for Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology and Dermatology.
I am Assistant Secretary of the British Association of Dermatologists and on the committee of the British Society for the study of Vulvovaginal disease.

I trained in plastic surgery in Slough, Newcastle upon Tyne, South Wales and Adelaide (South Australia). I have been the Surgeon for the Northern and Yorkshire Cleft Lip and Palate Service since 2002. I am Clinical Lead for the Cleft Service and also Head of Department for Plastic Surgery.
My major specialist interest is cleft lip and palate surgery including primary surgery in babies, speech surgery in young children and secondary surgery in older children and adults.
I have a major interest in facial plastic surgery and reconstruction of all sorts and a specialist interest in complex rhinoplasty.
Additionally, I have a broad practice in all aspects of aesthetic surgery outwith the NHS.

Consultant Plastic Surgeon since February 2005. I am a member of the following multi-disciplinary teams: Head and Neck Cancer, Skin Cancer, and Facial Palsy (Northern Facial Nerve Centre). I am passionate about improving both the appearance and the function of people who present with these problems, as well as disfigurement from other causes.

Mr Sahan Rannan-Eliya, is one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons, specialising in Hand Surgery both in adults and in Children, born with abnormalities of their hands. He is also one of our Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer specialists, working closely with colleagues from the Northern Cancer care centre at the Freeman and Dermatology at the RVI. He also specialises in reconstruction after major injury in both upper and lower limbs.
He was born in Sri Lanka, but grew up in Manchester, and studied his medicine at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities, qualifying in 1994. Since then he has worked throughout the UK, initially based in Oxford, where he did his research into children with craniofacial deformities, and then did his specialist training in Liverpool, Swansea, Sheffield and here in Newcastle, before returning as a Consultant in 2009.
He is a member of the UK Plastic Surgeons Overseas Training committee and has a longstanding interest in improving the availability of reconstructive techniques in poorer parts of the world. He led one of a number of teams to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and has worked in China, and Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
Special interests include hand surgery, skin cancer, lower limb and soft tissue trauma.
