I am passionate about improving both the appearance and the function of people who present with these problems, as well as disfigurement from other causes.

  • Biography

    Graduated from Glasgow Medical School in 2000 and completed Basic Surgical Training in 2003.   Mr Chatterjee trained as a plastic surgeon for 10 years (2003-13) undertaking Higher Surgical Training in Scotland and completed his senior training at the renowned Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit in Glasgow, with CCT in August 2013.

    Mr Chatterjee has several research publications and was awarded MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair from Cardiff University in 2007.  

    While at Canniesburn he was awarded a Fellowship in Plastic Surgery from both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, as well as the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. 

    Following entry onto the UK Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery 1st  August 2013, he subsequently undertook a 1 Year Post-CCT Hand Fellowship in Birmingham Hand Centre in 2013–14 and has successfully completed the European Diploma in Hand Surgery (2013) and the British Hand Diploma (2014).  Following this he undertook a 1 Year Post-CCT Breast Reconstruction Fellowship in Vancouver, Canada.

    On return to the UK Mr Chatterjee was appointed in July 2015 as a Locum Consultant Burns & Plastic Surgeon at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire, prior to commencing a substantive appointment in Newcastle.

    I have been a permanent member of staff at the RVI since joining as an SAS doctor in 2007.

    I obtained my Basic Medical Degree from University of Kerala, India in 1994 and subsequently had my post graduate training and qualifications in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery. I have passed the Intercollegiate Board exam in plastic surgery and have been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since 2002.

    I am interested in teaching and training and am a faculty in the North East flap course.

  • Biography

    Mr Sahan Rannan-Eliya, is one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons, specialising in Hand Surgery both in adults and in Children, born with abnormalities of their hands. He is also one of our Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer specialists, working closely with colleagues from the Northern Cancer care centre at the Freeman and Dermatology at the RVI. He also specialises in reconstruction after major injury in both upper and lower limbs.

     

    He was born in Sri Lanka, but grew up in Manchester, and studied his medicine at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities, qualifying in 1994. Since then he has worked throughout the UK, initially based in Oxford, where he did his research into children with craniofacial deformities, and then did his specialist training in Liverpool, Swansea, Sheffield and here in Newcastle, before returning as a Consultant in 2009.

     

    He is a member of the UK Plastic Surgeons Overseas Training committee and has a longstanding interest in improving the availability of reconstructive techniques in poorer parts of the world. He led one of a number of teams to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and has worked in China, and Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

    I trained in plastic surgery in Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Durham. I completed Advanced Training in Cleft Lip and Palate (Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham, Edinburgh) and the Paediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto). 

     

    My major specialist interests are cleft lip and palate, ear reconstruction and skin cancer in children and adults. I am also involved in helping patients with visible facial difference. 

     

    I am a founder member of the Cleft Trainee Collaborative which produces multicentre, cleft related research across the UK.  I am an Honorary Tutor at the Wound Healing Research Unit, Cardiff University.

    I trained in Plastic surgery in Yorkshire with a period as a registrar in South Africa.

    I have a particular interest in complex head, neck and facial reconstruction. I completed sub-specialist training in microsurgery, head neck/facial reconstruction at Princess Alexandra Hospital Brisbane Australia and Broomfield hospital UK. I was one of three nationally appointed Cosmetic surgery Interface fellows in 2015.

    In 2016 I was a DAFPRS scholar, where I gained advanced experience in complex nasal reconstruction/Septorhinoplasty.

    I work with the Cochrane Skin group (skin.cochrane.org) and am the current holder (2015-16) of the Clarke Medal, an international prize for surgical innovation.

    Trained in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery and microsurgery. My training in hand surgery is extensive and includes an attachment to an internationally-renowned plastic surgical, microsurgical and orthopaedic upper limb unit. This means that international experts have taught me all the latest available techniques in hand surgery and reconstructive microsurgery.

    I have obtained a PhD from the University of Sheffield for my research investigating the normal and reconstructed metacarpophalangeal joint in the human hand utilizing virtual reality technology.
