Radiology (Xray)

X-ray Children's Department RVI

Within the radiology department, we have a dedicated children’s department.

The department is based on level three of the New Victoria Wing at the RVI in Newcastle.

We provide a range of different types of x-ray for children. You can find more information about the range of children's x-rays.

Child-friendly facilities

The department has been designed to be child-friendly with brightly coloured pictures on the walls and a waiting area with toys, books, and a DVD and games station, to keep children amused while they wait for their examinations.

Facilities include:

  • a digital plain film room, which also has specialist equipment for spine scoliosis imaging
  • an ultrasound scan room
  • a fluoroscopy room where examinations such as micturating cystograms, barium studies, and video flouroscopies are carried out.

The department serves inpatients, outpatients and patients referred from General Practitioners.

During busy times children may be x-rayed elsewhere in the main department to reduce waiting times. Adults are sometimes x-rayed within the children’s department.

Children who have been seen in Accident and Emergency will have their x-rays taken in the rooms assigned to that department. All of our staff are experienced in the imaging of children and we also have a specialized paediatric team who would be happy to answer any queries about your visit to the department.
