General Nephrology Clinic

Contact: (0191) 213 7093 - Mrs Irene Gibbs (Clinic Secretary)

Clinical Lead:  Professor N Sheerin, Consultant Nephrologist

After a patient's first contact with the unit, either in the outpatient clinic or in hospital, many will need continued treatment for their kidney problem. This will be provided in the General Nephrology Clinic, in which a team of consultants will be responsible for the care of a wide range of kidney disorders.

Many people have kidney disease, but can live a healthy life despite this. It is important that we know what has caused the kidney disease and prevent it from doing further damage. Therefore, the main aim of the General Nephrology Clinic is to investigate and then prevent kidney problems from worsening. Emphasis is placed on treatment of the kidney disease, control of blood pressure and the management of any problems that might arise as a consequence of the kidney disease.

The clinic works closely with General Practitioners and when your kidney problem has been fully assessed and treated we will often ask your GP to continue looking after you with regular check ups and blood tests and to send you back to see us in the clinic if new problems develop.

What you can expect

You will be asked to provide a urine sample for testing and your weight, height and blood pressure will be recorded by the clinic nurse before your consultation with the doctor.  Afterwards you may have blood tests and an ultrasound scan of the kidneys.

Please bring a list of your medicines with you.  A detailed letter will be sent to your GP and you will be asked if you would like a copy for your records.
