Haemodialysis Clinic

Contact: (0191) 213 7149 - Mrs Marie Reeve (Clinic Secretary)

Clinical Lead:  Dr Suren Kanagasundaram, Consultant Nephrologist

This clinic specialises in the renal replacement therapy haemodialysis in patients with end stage kidney disease.

Although patients attend hospital on average three times each week for haemodialysis treatment, regular review appointments are important to discuss general health, any new and ongoing problems related to dialysis and kidney transplant status. A physical examination may be performed and medicines are reviewed.

All patients receiving haemodialysis have monthly blood tests the results of which are used to calculate ‘dialysis adequacy’. This is a measure of the quality of the haemodialysis treatment. Based on these monthly results, changes in the dialysis prescription are sometimes necessary and can include alterations to the length of each session. Comparison of adequacy is made against national standards to ensure the delivery of high quality care.

Patients are reviewed monthly on dialysis by specialist renal dieticians. Liaison with other specialties and members of the renal team can also be organised.

Appointments are usually booked for a dialysis day to minimise the number of hospital visits for our patients. There are always ‘urgent’ appointments available for patients who need to be seen before the next scheduled appointment.

What you can expect

Your dialysis records and blood results will be reviewed.

Please bring a list of your medicines with you.  A detailed letter will be sent to your GP and you will be asked if you would like a copy for your records.
