Renal Transplant Assessment Clinic

Contact: (0191) 213 1023 - Ms Emily Colquhoun (Clinic Secretary)

Clinical Lead:  Dr N Torpey, Consultant Nephrologist

This clinic is the only clinic in the Northern Region for patients with kidney failure who are under consideration for a kidney or a kidney-pancreas transplant.

For patients with kidney failure, appropriate treatment options will be discussed with their Nephrologist and with a Specialist Nurse.  Patients who are being considered for a kidney or a kidney and a pancreas transplant will undergo a thorough assessment of their general health and cardiovascular fitness.

Once a patient is thought to be medically fit enough for a kidney transplant, they will be examined by the Transplant Surgeons to decide upon suitability for a transplant operation. The details of the operation are explained and the possible benefits, risks and complications discussed. When all parties concerned are satisfied that a patient is suitable, the Transplant Coordinators will ‘activate’ them on the transplant waiting list.

What you can expect

You will be asked to provide a urine sample for testing and your weight, height and blood pressure will be recorded by the clinic nurse before your consultation with the doctor.  Afterwards you may have blood tests.

Please bring a list of your medicines with you.  A detailed letter will be sent to your GP and you will be asked if you would like a copy for your records.
