Renal Clinical Investigation Unit RCIU Freeman Hospital

The Renal Clinical Investigation Unit provides an outpatient service led by Specialist Nurse Practitioners who provide a wide range of care and support for patients with kidney disorders.
You may be seen in the RCIU for many reasons including blood tests, treatment, education, support and guidance. You will also be seen there regularly in the early weeks following a kidney transplant to closely monitor your progress and to make sure your new kidney is working well.
We run a comprehensive ‘pre-dialysis’ education programme. A personalised education portofolio has been developed to help you to understand all about your condition, and to be prepared for what to expect in terms of treatment and medication options. It also gives advice on nutrition and diet and how to maintain a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. The Renal Clinical Investigation Unit is based at Freeman Hospital. To find us:
- Come through the Main Entrance and follow the main corridor, passing the shop and hairdressers until you reach a junction at the end.
- Turn left and take the lift or stairs to level 4.
- From the lifts turn right and the stairwell turn left. Follow the long corridor in front of you until you almost reach the end, following the sign for the Renal Clinical Investigation Unit which you will find on your right-hand side.
Staff you are likely to meet
The Renal Clinical Investigation Unit is a nurse led unit run by nurse practitioners and led by Sisters Jeannie Turnbull and Karin Tapson.
You may also see other members of the renal team such as dieticians and social workers.
